History of Buninyong Cricket

Cricket in Buninyong dates back almost to the inception of town. There are mentions in the local papers of the time of cricket being played by Buninyong as early as the 1850's (April 1858 scorecard & report).  During the late 1800's and early 1900's they competed against such neighbouring towns as Napoleons, Lal Lal, Clarendon and Scotsburn in one off matches with no recognisable association or league type format.

In 1927 they joined the Buninyong Association and played their home games where the Buninyong Golf Club now resides, on a pitch located what is now the area between the 17th and 18th holes. Buninyong was very successful in the new competition winning three premierships in four seasons. The club folded in 1939 when World War II broke out.

In 1943 an under 19 team was formed.  They played only five years but won five premierships in a row and had some tremendous players - five of whom went straight into A-grade sides in Ballarat.

Buninyong was then without a cricket side until 1963 when the club was reformed.  The club reached the grand final in their first year, but after losing young players to Ballarat sides it again folded in 1970, but only for a short time. In 1972 Mr John McCarty, returning from Golden Point, and Mr Ed O'Loughlin restarted the club and it has been going strongly ever since.

In 2015/16 Buninyong joined the revamped BCA competition, entering their First XI side into the Division 2 competition with immediate results, winning the Div 2 premiership.

In 2018/19 Buninyong entered their first side in the BCA Division 1 competition.
